Athena Theny is an award-winning Costume Designer with an abiding interest in both how individuals express themselves through their clothes and the emotions that wardrobe evokes in others. Her degree in Psychology, with a minor in First Nations studies, has enabled her to create a visual language for characters who emerge seamlessly from their environments. Athena is acclaimed for her ability to collaborate with directors, cinematographers, and actors in developing a compelling aesthetic blueprint for each character that works within the narrative and thematic framework of the project in progress.

Athena is interested in building worlds from the inside out, and it is this humanistic and complex approach that allows her to create unique and engaging looks across film genres—from period pieces to sci-fi to fashion-forward contemporary projects. She is a visual storyteller who has an ability to immerse audiences in meticulously researched historical settings and to help create a luscious sensorial atmosphere.

Athena holds a diploma in Fashion Design, which equips her with the ability to understand costume construction, silhouette, texture, colour palette, and mood. She is a skilled artisan who has shown sculptures in contemporary art galleries, hosted leather workshops for Luis Vuitton, and provided jewellery designs for the personal collection of American Vogue’s Editor, Anna Wintour.

Athena takes inspiration from myriad aspects of pop culture: runway fashion, music, art and film history, technology, anthropology, and perhaps most importantly, people on the street.  She is uniquely qualified to handle projects that demand cultural sensitivity, nuanced realism, avant-garde aesthetics, and historical accuracy.

Athena is fluent in French and English and holds dual Canadian and Austrian (EU) citizenship. She is a member of IATSE 891’s Costume Department.
